One of a large number of surviving ceramics generated by the Northumberland election of 1826. The mug celebrates the return of Matthew Bell: it features a portrait of Bell inscribed 'BELL AND VICTORY', flanked by two blue flags, inscribed 'TRUE BLUE' and 'BELL and NORTHUMBERLAND'. Underneath is an inscription recording votes: 'the great contest, concluded at Alnwick July 6, 1826. Mr Bell 1380, Mr Liddell 1562. Mr Beaumont 1335'.
