One of a large number of surviving ceramics generated by the Northumberland election of 1826. The mug commemorates the return of Henry Thomas Liddell at the head of the poll: it has the inscription 'The great contest at Alnwick, concluded July. 6. 1826' and a portrait of Liddell with the inscription 'Hon. H. T. Liddell. The Choice of the People. & Northumberland's Glory'.
