George IV silver gilt two-handled cup and cover presented to Edward Ellice following his defeat in the Coventry election of 1826. When the cup was made, the result of the election was being disputed in parliament. The inscription reads: 'IN TESTIMONY OF THEIR HIGH ESTIMATION of his Wisdom as a Statesman, and his fidelity as a Representative, THIS CUP WAS PRESENTED TO Edwd. Ellice. Esqr. BY THE FREEMEN, AND INHABITANTS, OF COVENTRY, grateful for his Integrity and Public Spirit in defending their Rights and Franchise AGAINST THE ARBITRARY INFRINGEMENT OF JUSTICE, LAW, AND PRIVILEGE, practised in that City, DURING THE ELECTION, in June 1826. December 1826'.
