Poll book reference: Freeholders names... who in the last controverted election voted for Mr. Bertie and Mr. Smithson ([London], 1714).

Candidates: the Honourable James Bertie (Tory), Hugh Smithson (Tory), Scorie Barker (Whig), and John Austen (Whig).

James Bertie of Stanwell was the son of the earl of Abingdon, and had previously served as MP for New Woodstock.

Hugh Smithson had been elected (on and off) for Middlesex since 1701.

Scorie Barker came from a family of lawyers in Chiswick and had been elected for Middlesex since 1705.

John Austen was a returning candidate, having been elected during the 1709 by-election.

The election returned the Tories, Bertie and Smithson.
